Malcolm Arnold’s Concerto No 1 For Flute And Strings (1954) is a work of high energy and quickly shifting tonalities, pointed with dissonances and overlaid with flowing lines of the Flute alternating with skittering flurries in both Flute and Strings. The demands are the Flute soloist are virtuosic. Malcolm Arnold was a British composer who earned an international reputation both as a composer of serious works, including nine symphonies, and as a composer of light music. He composed more than one hundred film scores, among them the Oscar-winning music for The Bridge on the River Kwai, the award-winning music for The Inn of the Sixth Happiness, Whistle Down the Wind and Hobson’s Choice.

Composed for Amy Porter. This dramatic, colorful composition is cast in 2 interconnected movements. The first begins with a mysterious monologue by the flutist and is characterized by brilliant arabesque passages contrasted with subtle shadings of tone through the use of delicate dynamic nuances, tremolos, and flutter tonguing. As the piano enters, the ambience of the music shifts to one of nostalgic lyricism. The exciting second movement is moody, turbulent, and features a dance-like section hugely influenced by jazz and Latin music. Fantasie culminates in a rousing finale with the return of the Latin-infused dance.
MOON GLOW for flute and piano by Howard Buss captures the beauty and enchantment of a moonlit evening. Contrasting sections encapsulate varied moods suggested by moon glow on different surfaces: snow, water, and the eyes of a person gazing at the sky. Grade 4. Duration 5'.
The composer envisioned a setting in which a person is meditating in a forest on a sunny afternoon. Bird call fragments are interjected for new melodic and rhythmic ideas and influence the overall development of the work. This also symbolizes how environmental sounds can be suggestive and influence thought patterns. Grade 5. Duration 6'25".
